PERSONALITY

Pel was raised for authority, so authority sets easily on her shoulders, poised and dignified and taking no nonsense.  Perfectionist, mercurial and a bit dramatic, but that's being Inquisitor for you. Her emotional highs and lows are extreme, but only certain people are allowed to see them. She is used to working hard for what she wants, and more inclined to reach out to people rather than waiting for them to reach out to her. Very much a mama bear type of inquisitor. Would become a humorless ball of stress if not for certain companions.

Pel is by nature introverted and melancholic. She prefers a direct approach to problem-solving and is frustrated by people who do not. She is more focused on the issues at hand than how people feel about it, and is willing to hurt feelings if it will solve the problem, though she takes no enjoyment in the task.

When she chose her vallaslin, she chose those of Mythal, the protector, reflecting the deep-set duty of a future Keeper to protect her clan. She is deeply religious, though not toward the religion of which she is a figure. Though she wields the title "Herald of Andraste" for political reasons, she prays foremost to Mythal. The Maker, she has come to believe in her time as Inquisitor, may be a god, but he is not her god. If she is anyone's herald, she is Mythal's.  Similarly, she respects the beliefs of other races and does not consider her gods to be theirs.  She takes no issue with Cullen's devout Andrastian faith, though it's a bit of a wrench that their children will almost certainly be Andrastian themselves.  But since they will be human, it makes sense to concede that much.

Pel is not patient. She is somewhat irritable, critical of herself and of others, and certain topics will make her blow a fuse. She takes a certain delight in losing her temper because, as Inquisitor and as First, anger is one of the few emotions she is permitted to lose herself in, if it's for the right reasons. Most people around her see her as a force of nature, a source of cold might and tranquil fury, and because her wrath is generally channeled toward the deserving, her followers cheer to see it. Those closer to her will understand, however, that she feels just as deeply the things she does not express on the surface. Cullen sees it most, how easily he can make her knees weak, how his kisses makes her grin like a maniac for hours even when she doesn't realize it. Dorian and Varric hear her laugh. Josephine and Leliana see her insatiable curiosity and not-as-secret-as-she-thinks indulgence in vanity, and Sera alone has seen her weep. Pel doesn't think of herself as delicate, but she is covertly as fragile and desiring as anyone for love, meaning, friendship,
and hope.

HISTORY

Pel was born into a clan in Ferelden, but spent little of her early life there. As a toddler, she froze the grass she was beating with her hands during a temper tantrum. Since there were already three mages in the clan, she was quickly sent to the Lavellan clan, which had none but the Keeper. Pel remembers nothing of her life with her first clan, and only knows her own family from meeting them at the Arlathvhen.

Keeper Dashanna Istimaethoriel raised the child herself, as Pel was the only heir apparent for the Keeper for many years. Pel knew the responsibility she would one day face from the time she came to Clan Lavellan. From the first, she was a contributing member, and hard work was emphasized. Punishment was usually some menial but necessary task, such as carrying firewood or doing someone else's chores so they could take a break.

Pel had few friends growing up due to her position, so she was often found playing alone. She would pad barefoot a ways into the woods and find a spot that appealed to her, usually the thick roots of an oak or the low overhang of a canopy or the bank of a creek. Her toys were sticks, branches, pebbles, and imagination, and flowers or leaves woven into her hair. She drew complex fantasies for herself based on stories she learned, usually ones where she was a striking and noble heroine. When other children offered to play with her, she grew frustrated that she couldn't control the game or be the hero, and commonly left to continue playing on her own. As she grew older, some younger children noticed how good she was getting at braiding her long hair, and begged her to braid their hair as well. This was how she found out that she got along better with children younger than her, or adults much older than her. The children would take her play ideas and spin them in many directions, but ultimately defer to her expertise in fantasy. Playing with younger children became one of her greatest joys, and it grew only more joyful as she got older.

Her first meeting with her birth family was at the Arlathvhen when she was five years old. She did not remember them and cried when they tried to hold her. She was fifteen at their second meeting at the next Arlathvhen, and considerably more curious. By then, she had a younger brother, and fell desperately in love with the tyke. She was so heartbroken to leave them behind that she spent days on her own in the woods afterward, privately crying and trying to steel herself. When she was twenty-five and met them for the most recent time, she was glad to see them, but resolved herself to remain distant so she wouldn't be so destroyed by their departure again. Her brother barely remembered her, and was no longer especially interested in her, being of the age where he was sure he knew everything. Time spent with her parents just felt awkward. She was relieved when the event ended. Her Keeper had been both mother and father to her all her life, and she no longer wanted anyone else.

Her studies as First had her occasionally meeting with humans, since the Lavellan Keeper considered all races to have a sort of symbiotic relationship with each other. These meetings were always pre-arranged and done with considerable attention to security. Most recently, she had dealings with rebel mages, learning some of their lore and ideas and hearing what she could about the war and the Conclave. Her reports to the Keeper led to her assignment at the Conclave.

Trespasser Choices (SPOILERS)

-Iron Bull was not loyal to the qun
-Freed the dragon

*This choice was made to root out corruption in the ranks, but also because of something Solas once said--that while individuals have laid down power, no group has ever done so.  She decided that her first move against Solas would be to prove him wrong, and also rob him of a network of spies inside the Inquisition.  She is less powerful without her armies, but at least they are on even ground now with regards to information.  Also, she is 6000% done with the Inquisition, married, and ready to retire with a crisp new case of PTSD since losing her arm and her gods on the same day.  Moreover, since she drank from the Well of Sorrows, she does not trust herself in open opposition to Solas in her capacity as Inquisitor, with the might of nations at her disposal.
